Women the new breadwinners.

Men are supposed to work while women clean the house and take care of the children. That is a “traditional” gender role in today’s society(and from the fiftey's). That role has been forced upon both genders for thousands of years. That is why these “traditional” gender roles should not exist. It limits the freedom of an individual in today’s society.  Gender roles give no one the room to explore and find themselves in this already crazy world.
In the text, (An American role reversal: Women the new breadwinner by Daniel Cauchon), it talks about the role reversal of six different households. The first house hold is Tiffany Townsend’s, as she talks about her role reversal; she says “I even worry about how others will judge me. Women who work are sometimes perceived as sacrificing family for career.” This quote from the text proves how most people act towards women that work, all because of a role engraved in the female gender. A role that is pushed onto individuals the moment they are old enough to walk.
For Sherrie Daseier, another story in this text, her husband, Jim, feels having “the traditional housewife role has been a life’s disappointment for him.” This is a good example of a male being raised in a ‘traditional” gender role household. He feels like he has to work, and take care if the family financially. Men shouldn’t feel like that is an obligation. Men (and women) shouldn’t be forced to do something he/she doesn’t want to do. Sadly, most men and women go along with their assigned gender role in fear of being judged by other people.

Think back in history to the many things women and men couldn’t do. Boys didn’t take dance classes, they played sports. Girls didn’t play sports, they would take dance classes. Roles are reversing in today’s society and people don’t know how to act. They are so stuck in their great-grandfathers’ and mothers’ way that they can’t see this should have started many years ago. Times are changing and I am ready for the change. The traditional gender roles are no longer needed for today’s society, and as soon as people can realize that, the happier the future will be.
